In the last installment of our holiday gift guide we are covering the socially conscious person on your list. It can be hard to find the perfect ethical gift, whether that be fair trade, vegan or the philanthropic gift that gives back. Lucky for us, you and others behind the scenes of these products we have a few items that could satisfy the socially conscious person in your life.

Beyond just crossing someone off your list, you too can feel good about giving a gift to someone that is more than just an item. A gift that provided someone with a fair wage, didn't kill an animal in the production or helped out someone in need by your purchase. Plus just by shopping local you are doing your part! Sseko Sandals

Sseko sandals are fun lightweight DIY sandals hand made by women in Uganda and are perfect for the person who strives to be unique with their own style and flare.

How it works is you purchase the base and then pick your straps and lace up a pair of sandals to your choosing. Sseko provides lacing instructions on the back of the strap packaging and through YouTube videos, but once you get going it is easy to come up with your own unique strapping style.

Sseko Designs was created as a Not-Just-For-Profit business that helps bright young women of Uganda continue their education and pursue college educations. Sseko hires recent secondary school graduates for the nine months to live and work together while earning money that will go directly towards their university educations. Like many third world countries there is not equal opportunity for women to earn money to go the university, which often leads to bright women falling to poverty. The women who participate in Sseko's work program will not make sandals forever. They will go on to be doctors lawyers, politicians, writers and teaches that will bring change and unification to a country divided and ravished by a 22-year long war.

Tannenbaum Madness is back on Alberta Street. Join us November 25th from 4-8pm for opening night. Shops will be open late for your shopping and tree viewing pleasure. There are over 31 shops that are creating fun and artistic trees for a holiday event Alberta style. We have been working hard on our tree called "The 1% for the Planet tree, it's Upcycled yo!" We have created a tree solely out of what would be deemed as "garbage" from our shop. We are pretty proud to not have had to0 purchase any items in making our tree. Not to give it away, but we collected and used over 100 cardboard foot forms in the creation of our tree. I think what is most surprising is that collecting 100 foot forms took no time at all!

So on Nov. 25th don't go to the mall, come to Alberta Street and stroll from 10th-30th with a warm cup of coffee and kick start your holiday shopping and your holiday spirit! We will be having a Winter Sale starting opening night on the 25th, but more on that to come...

I have never been into handbags, I have always been more into my footwear than what I carried my stuff around in. Being a gal that likes clean lines and classic styling, I have found it hard to find the "right" bag that goes with everything and can take the beating that I put my stuff through. Then Crystalyn Kae came into my life with a green Topstitch Hobo bag and now I'm a bag nut!

Crystalyn Kae bags are made in Seattle, and designed with classic lines to be durable and Pacific Northwest weather proof. Though Crystalyn Kae offers bags made from recycled leather (which we love), we carry a wide arrange of her fabulous vegan bags in store. My favorite are the Glazed fabric variety that look like expensive leather, but instead are sturdy, water-resistant and incredibly easy to care for leather alternative. We are also a huge fan of her new upholstery fabric bag line, which is also super durable and easy to care for. Her color pallet ranges from classic black & brown to fun & feisty green, blue, burgundy and grey. There is definitely something for every one. I have always loved the idea of wearing a hat. Living in a wet climate it can be a good accessory to every outfit second only to a fabulous umbrella. Though I have many fabulous umbrellas, hats have always escaped me, never looking right or having the right fit. Then I met Bunny Huggins, was introduced to her Fidel style cap and now I can't wait for hat season.

One of my favorite things about a Bunny Huggins hat is they fit softly on your head, so you never feel like your brain is being squished, it is comfortable to wear all day and sometimes you forget you have it on. It's also pretty awesome that all Bunny Huggins hats are reversible. Yes, you don't just get one uniquely funky and flattering hat, you get two! Your accountant would be so impressed. Since all of Bunny's hats are handmade by Bunny in Portland, from reclaimed & vintage materials, no two hats are alike. I really like the fact that my hat is mine and I won't see another one like it out there. I wish I were more crafty and DIY like Bunny, but since I'm not, I'm glad there are spunky creative people like Bunny out there who are honing the are art of handcrafted goods.

The meeting will take place on Monday, February 8th, from 6:00 to 8:00pm, at the Acadian Ballroom at 1829 NE Alberta Street.

We know that there are many, many people who have an opinion about Last Thursday on Alberta-- positive, negative, or neutral. The Mayor and the Commissioner want to hear ALL of these opinions. They are contemplating a number of options for the future of Last Thursday, including continuing it as is, continuing it with substantial changes, or ending the event.

What's a Mohop? Well Mohop's are the most fabulously sustainable vegan shoes around. Hand-made by a Anne Mohaupt in Chicago, each shoe has an FSC certified wood base with ribbon laces (see picture). Anne recently stopped wholesaling her shoes in order to work on reducing her price point and expanding on styles and sizes. We are bummed that we will not be able to carry Mohop's anymore, but we are happy for Anne and the success she's has since taking her sales in house.

We do have one Mohop left and really want to get this fabulous shoe on one lucky lady's foot. It is just too awesome of a shoe to be footless...

City Repair's Earth Day Celebration 4/25/09

Even though it wasn't the sunniest or warmest of days, City Repair's Earth Day Celebration last Saturday was a blast. It was great to see familiar faces and shoes... (thanks to everyone who came to our booth to show us the shoes they got from our store, it really made our day!) It was also great to talk to people who are new to our store and concept, but mostly it was fun just enjoying the festivities of the day. The talking Robot with gardening advise was very cool and very funny at the same time. We also want to thank Try Vegan PDX an outreach group that helps people transitioning into a vegan lifestyle, who joined us in our booth on Saturday. They brought some tasty treats from Sweet Pea Bakery. It is always fun when we can do event that gets us out of the store, it is just an added bonus when the event has great music and really awesome veggie hotdogs. (mmmm, what a treat!)

Come join Alberta Street in kicking off the holiday season with a day full of sales and a evening featuring trunk shows and treats! 20 participating Alberta Businesses will be lighting up their storefronts at 5:00 PM Saturday November 22, with carolers strolling the streets from 5-9 PM to infuse you with holiday spirit!

Come visit Pie Footwear during Wrap it up on Alberta Street and put the finishing touches on your holiday party outfit and get some early holiday shopping done. Pie Footwear will be featuring a Holiday Heel Sale (see previous blog entry) all weekend and on Saturday between 5-9 PM will host two hot accessory trunk shows. We are excited to be joined by local jewelry artist Merry Kennedy, whose beautifully crafted necklace designs have been featured at The Real Mother Goose. Merry Kennedy will be on site with a one night showing of her work exclusively for Pie Footwear, which features the use of sterling silver and semi precious stones. We are also thrilled to be hosting a Reborn Bags trunk show Saturday night. Reborn bags are unique handcrafted handbags reborn from sweaters and vintage upholstery. All Reborn Bags feature vintage buttons and are made locally!

If you are a fan of Simple's Green Toe line, the NEW Toematillo ankle boot is a great fall addition to your wardrobe. Not only is it uniquely stylish, its design is also environmentally friendly and cruelty free! This boot uses water based glues and features a hemp upper, with natural coconut husk buttons, a bamboo heal and a recycled car tire outsole. Designed with fall weather in mind, recycled rubber is stitched around the base of the shoe to deflect water as you walk, a must have for a Portlander! As an added bonus, the Toematillo Boot features the Green Toe signature "egg crate" natural cork and latex insole for a free foot massage with every trip to the coffee shop. A durable sole made from recycled materials and low heel optimize on comfort and function. This style is a mid-calf pull-on boot with no zippers. It can be worn two ways: showing off the fabric for a stylish boot or covering the fabric for an everyday classic look. The recycled quilt scraps used in creating the Janis Boot are from tribal quilts produced in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Each pair of boots is created using a different quilt. No two boots are a like.
